OAK IS A VERY HARD WOOD, AND BLUNTS OUR GOUGES VERY QUICKLY(!), BUT IT IS ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES - STRONG GRAIN, TAKES A FINISH BEAUTIFULLY, AND DENSE AND SOLID TO HOLD.

THE GRAIN ALLOWS US TO TURN THESE ITEMS TO A FINE FINISH, AND THEY ARE THEN POLISHED SIMPLY WITH NATURAL SUBSTANCES (LINSEED OIL AND THEN BEESWAX POLISH FROM OUR OWN BEES).

THIS SHALLOW ELM VOTIVE OR MIXING BOWL (NOW SOLD - we will make similar for you) CAME FROM A TREE AFFLICTED WITH DUTCH ELM DISEASE, WHICH, THOUGH IT KILLS THE TREE, LEAVES THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BLACK STAINS OR MARKINGS IN THE WOOD WHICH ONLY COME TO LIGHT ON THE LATHE - WHICH I TAKE AS PART OF THE MAGIC OF WORKING WITH IT.

WE ARE PARTAKING IN A PROGRAM OF REPLANTING IN AN ATTEMPT TO PUT THESE NOBLE TREES BACK ON THE LANDSCAPE. WE'LL LET YOU KNOW HOW SUCCESSFUL WE WERE IN ABOUT 400 YEARS!
